Frequently asked questions
Everything people usually ask before installing.
Is New Tab Dashboard free?
Yes. Every feature is free to install and use. There are no paid tiers, no trial periods, and no upsells inside the dashboard.
Do I need to create an account?
No. The dashboard works fully without an account — your notes, to-dos, mantras, and settings are saved in your browser. Creating an account is optional and only needed if you want those things to sync across devices.
What happens to my data?
By default, everything stays in your browser using local storage. We never see your bookmarks, top sites, or browsing history. If you sign in and turn on sync, only the settings and content you choose to sync are sent to our servers — nothing else. Full details are on the privacy policy page.
Does it work offline?
Yes for the core features: clock, notes, to-dos, bookmarks, mantras, countdowns, and your saved backgrounds all work without internet. Weather updates and sync need a connection.
Will it slow down Chrome?
No. The dashboard only loads when you open a new tab, and there are no background trackers, ads, or analytics SDKs. It uses Chrome's native APIs for bookmarks, alarms, and notifications, so the overhead is minimal.
Can I use my own photos as backgrounds?
Yes. You can upload your own JPG or PNG images alongside the curated categories (Nature, Cities, Abstract, and more). The dashboard automatically picks readable text colors so the clock and quotes stay legible on any image.
Does the weather widget work for my city?
Most likely. The built-in city database covers 12,000+ cities across 188 countries. You pick your city by name — the extension never asks for your geolocation. If your exact town isn't listed, the nearest major city's temperature is usually within a degree or two.
Does it work on Firefox, Edge, or other browsers?
The Chrome Web Store version works on Chrome and any Chromium-based browser (Edge, Brave, Arc, Vivaldi, Opera). A Firefox build also exists and is available through the Firefox Add-ons store.
How do I restore Chrome's default new tab page?
Just uninstall the extension from chrome://extensions (or right-click the extension icon → Remove from Chrome). Chrome's default new tab page returns immediately, and your synced data on our servers is kept for your account if you sign back in later.
I have a question or feedback. How do I reach you?
Email [email protected] and we'll get back to you. You can also send feedback directly from the help section inside the extension.
Built for focus.
New Tab Dashboard stores your data locally in your browser by default. When you choose to sign in, your settings sync securely across devices.
